About the Event

Each registration payment allows up to three people - a couple and one officiant to attend these classes together or watch later!

This class meets on Wednesdays, November 30th, December 7th and 14th from 8:00-9:30 p.m. EST.

Have you been asked by friends to officiate at their wedding, and you’re not sure how to do it well? Or are you planning to get married in the next year or so, and you want to be in the driver’s seat to design a ceremony that will be a good fit for you? Or are you just interested in learning more about Jewish and Jew-ish weddings, or in thinking innovatively about Jewish life-cycle rituals more generally? If so, this class is for you!

A Jewish wedding does not require a rabbi, but many non-rabbis feel nervous about being asked to officiate a wedding, and many couples feel nervous about asking a friend or relative to officiate, fearing that they won’t “get it right.” This class will mix study, discussion, and workshopping to maximize participants’ confidence in taking charge of their Jewish or Jew-ish weddings!

Whether you are thinking about a wedding where both partners are Jewish, or only one of the partners is Jewish, this class will give you an understanding of the traditional framework of a Jewish wedding in order to maximally empower you to pick and choose the elements that you find meaningful and to re-engineer the elements that have some potential but don’t quite fit—or to get even more creative. The class will also explore how an officiant can lead the couple, the family, and the guests through a powerful and meaningful experience, whatever formal elements you choose.
